Until the mid-20th century, Burgas was a bustling, cosmopolitan trading port town with a significant Jewish community, which built a large synagogue. It is now the city art gallery. During renovations in the early 2000s, parts of the original Jewish decoration under the dome were covered. They have now been restored and coexist with the exhibition of Orthodox icons from the Burgas region.
