The installation represents the disintegration of society, its fragmentation through the ‘fission’ of the Self into opposing values and emotions. Human blundering in the extreme and the pendulum of personal and group emotion are reflected in the ‘special’ mirror of infinity. Two half-heads, half-faces in a mirrored chamber-cube represent two polar-opposite emotions. The sculptures, cut in half and placed next to each other, recreate joy and anger. Their reflection makes each one a whole. The viewer sees himself among them in the infinite mirror. Together, they become a swarm of endlessly alternating emotions.
The artist’s experiment in using such a kaleidoscopic approach is an attempt to build on his own style. Having worked principally in the domain of sculpture, with this project he now takes a step further towards the installation. ‘Fragmentation’ can be added to all such contemporary works, much more significant than their final appearance, as to experience them is the principal element.
The projects of Dragomir Kostadinov – PXRN, a member of the Advertising Artists platform for contemporary visual art since its launch in 2015 with the Synergy Non-profit Association, raise the issues of creativity, of human fears and phobias, of possibilities, and the limitations that we impose on ourselves, but for which we often tend to blame the environment, society, or artificial intelligence. These themes are both relevant and awkward, as are Dragomir’s works. They attract us and, once we penetrate their essence, we see our own reflection in our lonely, troubled and uncertain existence.
The project was financed under the Visual Arts Programme (2023) of the Ministry of Culture.
