The earliest evidence of a Jewish presence in Bulgaria was found in the Roman garrison town of Ulpia Escus near the modern village of Gighen, not far from the Danube. An inscription testifies that here, as early as the 2nd century CE there was a Jewish community of the so-called Romaniotes with its own synagogue.
