The new publication ‘Selected from the Collection: Aquarelles and Drawings’ is the third volume in the National Gallery series that continues an acquaintance with its variety of collections through a careful selection of works by various artists, and of styles, epochs and cultures. As a first attempt to gather together a selection of aquarelles and drawings from the museum collections, it has, inevitably, reflected the history of Bulgarian and foreign art, with their driving developments and trends from the second half of the 19th century to the present day. Following the previous catalogue, dedicated to print graphics, this new edition reveals yet another segment of the wealth of art on paper. The accompanying emotional, characteristic and analytical summaries by the curators who contributed to this volume place these works within the broad context of the history of art and society at a time when (according to W. Benjamin) ‘technological reproducibility’ prevails.
