The Phodar Foundation was established in 1999, with a subject of activity in the visual arts, and focusing on photography. The principal output of the Foundation’s activities is the International Photo Festival, the Phodar Biennale. Previous editions of the biennale were held in partnership with the Pleven Municipality, in the Iliya Beshkov Art Gallery. Over the years, representative collections of the biennale have taken place in Sofia (the National Palace of Culture, 1999; the foyer of the Central Railway Station, 2004; and the National Gallery, 2006), Plovdiv (International Fair, 2003 and 2004), Gabrovo (House of Humour and Satire , 2010 and 2011), and St Kliment Ohridski Sofia University (the Alma Mater Gallery, 2014).
Festival statistics show that over 14,000 works by more than 1,200 artists from 53 countries have participated in the nine editions of the forum. The regulations of the competition are not oriented towards representatives of the mass amateur trend. The editions are thematic, only photographic formats are admitted, and the jury comprises 9 to 11 experts in the spheres of photography, the visual arts, and various humanitarian fields.
The exhibition, ‘Fact, Fiction, Truth’, at the Museum of Socialist Art, presents works of young artists and those oriented towards the present from the countries of Eastern Europe, showing series by 27 photographers from 14 countries. Curator of the exhibition and chairman of the Phodar Foundation is Antoan Bozhinov.
